This photo is taken from behind King's Bay above Father's Lake. It was taken by my nephew Kenneth from the top of where some people High style with their snowmobiles. It is about 300-400 feet in elavation. The incline is roughly 60 to 70 degrees.

 

The Inuinnaqtun name of Holman is Ulukhaktok, which means where Ulu parts are found.

According to the book written by the late and greatly missed Richard Condon who was assisted by Julia Ogina, The Northern Copper Inuit Holman was established 1939. There are three bays that are around Holman. Jack’s Bay, Queen’s Bay and King’s Bay.

The coordinates for Olokhaktok are

Northing 70 degrees 44 minutes 26.9 seconds

Westing 117 degrees 44 minutes 36.5 seconds

Ulukhaktok’s population is around 400 – 450 people. There are two local grocery stores here in Ulukhaktok, The Northern Store (Northwest Company) and The Holman Eskimo Co-op. The local Post Office is situated in the Co-op. There also is a one hotel called The Copper Ulu Inn which can accommodate 16 guests. Within the inn there is a small cafeteria where a local or guest can go for lunch or a bite to eat. The Holman Eskimo Co-op also takes care of The Artshop where prints, crafts (such as mitts, hats, scarves, etc...) & carving can be purchased. 

The Helen Kalvak Elihakvik School has about 113 students attending the school. The grades range from Kindergarten through to grade 12. The school was just recently renovated this past year to accommodate the high school.  There is  a principle, 10 teachers, 6 support staff, secretary and 2 custodians.

The Hamlet of Holman takes care of municipal affairs such as water and sewage services, road maintenance, and public housing maintenance. (through NWT Housing Corporation)   There are Housing Corporation employs one Journeyman Housing Maintainer, a second year Apprentice Housing Maintainer, and three Assistant Building Maintainers. The Recreation Department is headed by the Recreation Coordinator. The coordinator is in charge of making scheduling annual events such as Christmas games, Easter Games, Kingalik Jamboree, Gary Bristow Classic, JD Cameron Golf Open, Randy Greg Jr. Open and the Billy Joss Celebrity Golf Tournament. There are also two Facility Building Maintainers. They maintain the Ulukhaktok Sports Complex, The Community Hall, the recreation side of the Gymnasium and the Katimavik Centre.  The Hamlet vehicles are maintained by their Heavy Duty Mechanic   The Hamlet Office is administered by a Senior Administrative Officer, Assistant SAO, Tenant Relations Officer, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Finance Officer, Finance Clerk, AHF worker, Secretary, Income Support Worker and some other employees I cannot seem to remember right now. ( I will add them when I find out which they may be.)

There is also the Mark Emigak Health Centre, also known as the nursing station. It is stationed with two nurses, but services may be cut to one nurse. In addition the nursing station employs a Secretary, Community Health Representative, Elder Care Worker, and a Custodian

The Kayutak Centre is the office building consists of the Olokhaktok Hunter's & Trapper's Office, Holman Community Corporation, Self Government Office, Holman Development Corporation.

The Katimavik Centre is used for various occasions. Such as Elder gatherings, drum dances, traditional skill teaching programs for children, sewing classes for both boys and girls. The Holman Dictionary Project is also situated in the Katimavik Centre. (Katimavik means gathering place)

For child care services there is The Child development Centre. It is combine as a Daycare and Pre-school. There are nine caretakers for the children. Not sure how many children attend pre-school and daycare, I think between ten to fifteen.

There is also local CKHI radio station. A weekly local radio program is aired Friday afternoons. During the program is a weekly contest to translate English words to Innuviliktun/Innuinaktun language. Up until spring there is also radio bingos held by various fundraising committees such as Kingalik Jamboree Committee, Special Events Committee Vestry Comity to name a few.

There is only one gas station here in Ulukhaktok. It is a father/son run business. Boak's Services. (Will have to check name)

Kitekudlak's Construction just recently constructed The Copper Ulu Inn.

Inuk's Plumbing does general plumbing contracts .

PTO's Services does general contracting and renovating.
